You may be aware that Alchemised is a reinterpretation of SenLinYu’s Manacled, a lengthy fan fiction that blends themes from Harry Potter and The Handmaid’s Tale. However, it’s important to note that you do not need to have read Manacled to fully enjoy Alchemised. In fact, Manacled was removed from Archive of Our Own before Alchemised was published, and any versions of Manacled available for purchase are being sold illegally. Nonetheless, if you are familiar with Manacled, you’ll likely notice many parallels in scenes and dialogue woven throughout Alchemised.
Alchemised takes place in a dark fantasy realm called Paladia and follows a storyline similar to that of Manacled. It begins with the protagonist, Helena, being awakened from stasis and discovering that over a year’s worth of her memories are either missing or altered. Before her capture, Helena was an alchemical healer fighting alongside the Resistance – a faction engaged in a brutal conflict against necromancers. She was captured as a prisoner when the Resistance’s efforts failed. Now, to recover her lost memories, Helena is sent to consult one of the most powerful – and dangerous – necromancers, the High Reeve. The goal is to have him retrieve her memories for the High Necromancer, who suspects that Helena is hiding secrets about the Resistance that could still be weaponized against him.
