Like so many readers, I'd been counting down the days for a new Colleen Hoover release—the same anticipation is starting to build for Rebecca Yarros, too. The moment Woman Down hit the shelves, I dove right in. Now, I didn't expect another Verity, but I was hoping for something more than this.

The book opens with a personal note from the author, asking readers to separate the story from her life and to simply be kind. I find that request completely reasonable. As a writer myself, I know how deeply negative feedback can cut. People can be cruel, but reviews also serve a purpose. The key is learning the difference between constructive critique and just being mean. Didn't like it? Fine. Tell me why with a real reason beyond "just because." I can work with that.

With that out of the way, here are my thoughts.

My first issue is that this is marketed as a thriller. To me, it wasn't thrilling. The plot felt predictable, except for a handful of moments. Maybe two scenes generated real tension? At best, it was lackluster. The main reasons are the predictability and a beginning that drags. The pacing was way too slow. For a good thirty percent of the book, the central conflict hinges on whether the protagonist, Petra, will ever write again. That singular stake just didn't hook me. Even when the danger escalated, I didn't feel any real urgency until the final act. And honestly? Petra got on my nerves.

Which brings me to the characters. Oh, Petra. I empathized with her self-doubt—it's awful when the world seems to conspire against you. But every decision she makes after arriving at that cabin? Frankly, they were just dumb. I couldn't support a single choice she made, and that's a major reason the story fell flat for me. I never connected with her. As for Saint? Well, he was...there. I saw no character development, no arc—just a "hot cop." And don't get me started on Petra's neighbors. Sheesh.

Ultimately, the plot wasn't as tight as I wanted. A thriller needs more thrilling moments, and this one doesn't find its pulse until you're deep into the second half. The stakes felt low, and it showed. What did I like? Hoover's signature engaging prose. Her ability to pull you in with emotional, readable writing is why I'm a fan. Woman Down has that same style—it just never quite lands the punch.
