Kakutani Michiko –
This book sets a high bar for all other suspense novels. Karin Slaughter is simply a master of this genre. Her character development is so well done that it’s impossible not to get caught up in the Clifton’s family drama. The crimes here are brutal and heartbreaking. It’s hard to read about cruelty to children in any form, and what happens here are the worst kinds of crime. To balance these horrors, Ms. Slaughter gives us beautiful relationships between a close but broken family. I am rarely moved to tears while reading a thriller, but this one really got to me.
Emma Smith –
This is the debut in a new mystery series by the brilliant Karin Slaughter. It centers around a deeply flawed family of sheriffs in a rural Georgia county, and I’m already eager to see what’s next for the Clifton family. In the brief first act, two teenage girls go missing on the night of the fireworks in North Falls—a town reminiscent of Cheers, where everyone knows your name-and Officer Emmy Clifton and her father Gerald, the sheriff, work tirelessly to find them. They understand that if the girls aren’t rescued within hours, the chances of them being found alive drop to nearly zero. Fast forward twelve years to the second and third acts of this Shakespearean drama, filled with precise, page-turning police procedural details: another girl disappears, and once again, time is running out. Emmy is haunted by the mistakes she believes she made over a decade earlier. What makes WE ARE ALL GUILTY HERE such a gem, however, are the Clifton’s themselves-especially Emmy and her estranged older sister Jude, who returns from California to assist with the case, and their timeless aunt, whose grumpy demeanor becomes increasingly charming in a strange and wonderful way. How much did I love this novel? I already can’t wait for the next installment. (No pressure, Karin, no pressure.)
Ink book –
A gripping and intense mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. The story of two missing girls, Officer Emmy Clifton’s pursuit of the truth, and the dark secrets lurking in the town is compelling and emotionally charged. A must-read for fans of suspense and psychological thrillers. Truly unforgettable.
Book Review –
This was a GREAT book! Karin Slaughter has become one of my favorite authors. She has an incredible writing style. The characters and story line are both complex and captivating with twist and turns that keep you engaged from beginning to end. I love the movement through time in this book and how she develops the case by circling back to the beginning. The introduction to the new character in the second half brought to light history and personal details to help build the background of Emmy and the Clifton family. Kathleen Early is a wonderful narrator and brings the characters to life! I can’t wait for more to come in the new North Falls series.
