This is the kind of novel that seizes you from the very first page. It is a relentless ride - shocking, heartbreaking, and brutally honest - yet you are never in doubt that you are in the hands of a master storyteller. The plotting is impeccable, clever, and packed with relentless momentum. Karin Slaughter has instantly become an author whose entire backlist I need to explore.
The story unfolds in North Falls, a classic American small town where generations of the Clifton family have worn the badge. When two teenage girls vanish during the annual Fourth of July fireworks, Detective Emmy Clifton takes the lead, working alongside her father and her own son. The case is personal; one of the missing girls is the daughter of Emmy's closest friend, and Emmy herself was among the last to see the teen alive.
But this is no straightforward kidnapping. The investigation triggers a chain of tragic events that fractures the community. As Emmy digs deeper, she uncovers a web of secrets, proving that in North Falls, everyone is hiding something and trust is a fragile illusion. Her pursuit of the truth - spanning years from the initial disappearance to a tense trial and a chilling new case - begins to erode the town's foundations and her own family bonds. I was completely drawn to Emmy Clifton. Here is a middle-aged woman balancing a demanding career with complex family dynamics. She is warm, deeply relatable, and reacts to unimaginable pressure in profoundly human ways. The potential for this to launch a North Falls series is thrilling; I am already eager to follow Emmy's next chapter.
True to her name, Slaughter delivers a narrative that holds nothing back. The twists are genuinely jaw-dropping; I found myself unprepared for the brutal brilliance of some revelations. Yet, every shocking turn is meticulously crafted and ultimately credible. The mystery kept me constantly guessing, and I was consistently wrong - the real clues are masterfully buried within layers of compelling red herrings.
I recommend this book unreservedly for readers who crave crime fiction with authentic grit and almost unbearable tension. There were moments I had to set the book aside simply to process what I had just read, yet the pull to return to North Falls was immediate and irresistible.

This book sets a high bar for all other suspense novels. Karin Slaughter is simply a master of this genre. Her character development is so well done that it’s impossible not to get caught up in the Clifton’s family drama. The crimes here are brutal and heartbreaking. It’s hard to read about cruelty to children in any form, and what happens here are the worst kinds of crime. To balance these horrors, Ms. Slaughter gives us beautiful relationships between a close but broken family. I am rarely moved to tears while reading a thriller, but this one really got to me.

They understand that if the girls aren’t rescued within hours, the chances of them being found alive drop to nearly zero. Fast forward twelve years to the second and third acts of this Shakespearean drama, filled with precise, page-turning police procedural details: another girl disappears, and once again, time is running out. Emmy is haunted by the mistakes she believes she made over a decade earlier. What makes WE ARE ALL GUILTY HERE such a gem, however, are the Clifton’s themselves-especially Emmy and her estranged older sister Jude, who returns from California to assist with the case, and their timeless aunt, whose grumpy demeanor becomes increasingly charming in a strange and wonderful way. How much did I love this novel? I already can’t wait for the next installment. (No pressure, Karin, no pressure.)

Book Review –
This was a GREAT book! Karin Slaughter has become one of my favorite authors. She has an incredible writing style. The characters and story line are both complex and captivating with twist and turns that keep you engaged from beginning to end. I love the movement through time in this book and how she develops the case by circling back to the beginning. The introduction to the new character in the second half brought to light history and personal details to help build the background of Emmy and the Clifton family. Kathleen Early is a wonderful narrator and brings the characters to life! I can’t wait for more to come in the new North Falls series.
