The real story, however, begins in the second half, upon Frankie's return. Here, Hannah masterfully shifts focus to the long, quiet battle of aftermath, exploring the lingering weight of trauma with a tension that is psychological, profound, and deeply moving.

Hannah weaves multiple themes - grief, friendship, love - throughout the narrative. A romantic subplot, while not central, adds another layer of poignant loss. But the core theme she examines is shame. While her brother is celebrated as a hero, Frankie's own service is met with silence. Her family tells neighbors she was in Florence, "gaining experience." Her stories of Vietnam are met with disbelief or dismissal. Even when seeking help for her debilitating PTSD, veterans' clinics turn her away with the cruel fiction: "Women weren't in Vietnam." She, and the critical role of nurses, are erased. This national shame, this collective desire to forget, inflicts further damage on Frankie's life, blocking her path to processing her pain. The country's embarrassment over the war is a burden paid for by the women who served.

The Women by Kristin Hannah is a powerful and necessary read that illuminates a forgotten chapter of history. While I knew of the Vietnam War, I was unaware of the erased legacy of the women who served and the pervasive shame that followed them home. This story held me captivated from beginning to end. Hannah’s ability to delve into heavy, controversial themes with such depth and empathy, without ever becoming repetitive or losing momentum, is truly remarkable. I recommend it without reservation.
