Fortunately, Simon proves to be a different breed of lawyer than Eleanor's previous one - the kind who had the audacity to write himself a half-million dollar bequest. Instead, Simon helps her structure her estate through a series of charitable trusts, which he would, naturally, manage for a fee of $500 an hour. He even encourages her to leave something for her two selfish, recently-reappeared stepsons. He starts by digging into her finances to verify her story, which Eleanor, ever secretive, takes as a deep personal insult. In the end, he takes her at her word. Their professional relationship blossoms into a genuine friendship - he takes her to regular lunches and becomes a person she can truly rely on.

When a car accident lands Eleanor in the hospital, Simon moves to secure power of attorney and an advance health directive to make decisions on her behalf. As her condition deteriorates, he struggles with the decision to withdraw life support, ultimately leaving that terrible choice to the medical team.

Simon's world unravels when police, acting on a tip, discover Eleanor was poisoned by cookies he himself had given her. He is swiftly arrested and charged with her murder.

Here's the twist - Simon is our narrator. We know he didn't do it. We know the money initially drew him to her case, but we also saw him develop what seemed like a genuine, if complicated, care for her. He's flawed, but he's not a killer.

Grisham masterfully controls the novel's pace. The wait for Simon's day in court never drags, and we are quickly thrust into the trial, where the prosecution's case appears to be built on sand - a tower of assumptions with little concrete evidence.

I particularly appreciated the layers added to Simon's character - his crumbling marriage, his relationships with his children strained by the scandal, his confrontation with a gambling problem that signals his rock bottom. And, of course, Grisham remains a master of the legal thriller. I will confess, however, that the final direction the story took felt unexpectedly random, even jarring. A few more red herrings or potential suspects might have made the waters murkier and the ending less abrupt. While perhaps Grisham's point is the sheer randomness of fate, the conclusion left me wanting a bit more closure. I loved everything about this book - except its final few pages.

"The Widow" is a compelling, character-driven puzzle that will hook you from the first chapter. For a truly immersive experience, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook - the narration brings Simon's conflicted voice and the courtroom tension to brilliant life. Or, of course, settle in with the paperback for a classic Grisham page-turner.
