Refreshingly honest and powerfully written, my debut novel is a raw, fresh take on girlhood and the chaotic journey of growing up. It's a darkly funny, deeply addictive story that digs into power dynamics and the lasting wounds of childhood neglect. This isn't just fiction I wrote—it's a truth I needed to tell.
Most of you met me as the aggressively comedic Sam Puckett on Nickelodeon's iCarly and Sam & Cat. But my public story changed in 2022. That's when I walked away from acting and published my memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died. I let readers see behind the curtain—into the reality of being a child actor, the complexity of my relationship with my mother, and my struggles with food. Half His Age, while fiction, echoes that same unfiltered voice, exposing the painful realities young girls face. The novel draws on my own past, including a relationship I had with a much older man when I was eighteen.
The story follows Waldo, a teenager, and her impulsive, emotion-driven obsession with her creative writing teacher, Mr. Korgy. I wrote it to explore the rage and confusion that can shape a young girl's ideas about love and worth. Waldo's only real guide is her mother, who told her from age five that "the best way to keep a man is to be as pretty as you can be." I wrote Waldo to highlight the devastating consequences of a lack of parenting and support. She's often home alone, filling the void with online shopping and an unhealthy attachment to her teacher, forcing her to grow up too fast and caretake for her mother's volatile emotions.
I've read many stories about age-gap relationships that dangerously romanticize grooming and abuse. In Half His Age, I intentionally and subtly underscore the uncomfortable, predatory nature of the dynamic. He is always "Mr. Korgy," never given a first name, a constant reminder of the power imbalance. This is highlighted when Waldo herself says, "I'm sorry I'm so immature. I guess that's what happens when you date an eighteen-year-old." Her own words reveal how much of a child she truly is. And even though Waldo can't see it, the abuse is clear: their meetings almost always lead to secretive, hidden sexual encounters. He masterfully manipulates the narrative, blaming Waldo for initiating things, despite his role as her teacher and his constant pursuit of her in private. It's a subtly harrowing yet essential read.
Despite the darkness, I didn't abandon my comedic roots. The novel is darkly hilarious, packed with sharp one-liners that propel you forward. Waldo's wry takes on her job at Victoria's Secret and growing up in a world of curated social media make her a flawed, relatable character. You can't help but laugh and root for her through lines like, "it's nice to believe that the only difference between me and Margot Robbie is a stick of blush."
This book is a compelling, brutal, and surprisingly funny examination of desire, self-destruction, and the exploitation of the powerless. It's a story I needed to write, and I believe it's one you need to read. I highly recommend the audiobook for its gripping narration, or pick up a physical copy and experience it for yourself.

I’ll give this 5* with no begrudging. I’m pretty easy with my 5*, they’re not reserved for the best book I’ve ever read, just very good books. I thought The Name of the Wind was “very good”. I read it in what for me was a very short span of time – it had that ‘more-ish’ quality that best sellers need.

I’d just like to say that I don’t work for DAW or Brilliance Audio, either..
That being said, Patrick Rothfuss is an amazing writer. I read this book on a whim, picking it up one day on the recommendation of someone in the bookstore, and found it to be one of the most amazing pieces of prose I’ve ever read. The narration is quite well done, bringing the character of Kvothe to life quite well. I’m not sure that the gentleman who gave the book a bad review quite understood what was going on in the book; it’s the life story of a man not yet thirty as told to a scribe in the common room of a inn. It doesn’t have the in-depth worldbuilding of a Jordan or a Martin, but it’s up there in terms of storytelling and character development.
Pull up a chair at the inn and give a listen… –
Kvothe is a legend and everyone has heard of him. Sure the tales often differ and contradict each other but here is your chance to sort out the truth from the exaggerations. Rothfuss offers you the opportunity to hear Kvothe’s story from the man himself and who could pass up an opportunity like that? Grab a chair and a mug and settle in for a long listen.
What makes this an excellent book is the detail of the world that Patrick Rothfuss has created. I always love a detailed magic system in fantasy literature and there is more than one of them to be had in the Kingkiller Chronicles. Kvothe’s tale starts when he is young and the listener learns about the various magics in the world right along with him. The style and structure of the story really isn’t anything new, but it’s done really well. I am amazed at the level of detail provided and yet it is obvious that the surface has barely been scratched. There is a lot more to come in the subsequent books and I am looking forward to them.
So why only 4 stars if everything was so great? Well it took me over half the book to feel like I was really in a fantasy world. For me, Kvothe’s language was too much like my own and Podehl’s narration only reinforced that feeling. Despite the content it just didn’t “feel” like a fantasy book of swords and sorcery. The good news is that I got over it and I am now happily listening to book two. So if you start listening and have that same feeling don’t give up – it will pass and you will be glad you stuck it out.
Another Addiction –
I never write reviews but I do usually rate the audio books I truly consume my life. If you love Jim Butcher’s Princeps’ Fury and Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn Series, you’ll love this first installment of Patrick Rothfuss. The narration is great due to the degree of character separation which ends up being entertaining story telling. I only wish I could find more series like this. I’ve ran out of scifi/fantasy books to listen to and crave more…
