My prior experience with Freida McFadden's work was limited to a single title, "The Boyfriend." While I found it entertaining, the plot felt overly engineered - a series of misdirects culminating in a twist so telegraphed it would have been more surprising if there wasn't one. Yet, here I am, picking up "The Intruder." Why? Because it wasn't just on Amazon's Top 100 Books of the Year list. It finished at #6. That kind of success demands a second look. It forces a question: has Freida McFadden, a writer who has made a fortune out of this formula, written something great?
The story opens in the present. Casey Carter, a former school teacher hiding from a troubled past, is living in a remote New Hampshire cabin. She's preparing for a major storm when she goes to the shed on the property and finds a girl about twelve years old, a knife in hand, covered in blood. The girl is silent, defensive. Casey, drawing on her teacher's training, tries to coax the girl inside. But in doing so, is she inviting in a stranger who should have been left outside?
Interspersed with this are chapters titled "Before." They follow the life of a girl named Ella, a middle-schooler living in extreme squalor with her mother, a severe hoarder who is emotionally and physically abusive. The reader is left to question - is Ella the young girl Casey found? It would certainly seem so. But again, this is Freida McFadden. There's a twist coming, but maybe this time it will be earned.
The first three-quarters of the book are standard McFadden. The plot feels eerily similar to "The Boyfriend," but the last quarter of "The Intruder" is significantly better. While it doesn't rise to the level of the top books I read this year, it wasn't far away. McFadden stays true to herself - there is at least one twist. But she does so in a more mature way, where it feels less like an overly contrived attempt to surprise the reader and more like something that ties together some loose ends in a meaningful way.
This book is a great step in that direction. It is definitely a must-read if you are a Freida McFadden fan, but also just an above-average thriller worth your time.
I highly recommend it. If you're looking for a gripping read that is both entertaining and surprisingly well-paced, pick up a copy. Or better yet, listen to it. The audiobook is narrated with a chilling precision that brings the characters to life in a way that will make your hair stand on end.

I really enjoyed listening to The Intruder by Freida McFadden. The suspense kept me hooked from start to finish, and the twists were shocking and well-executed. The narration was engaging and added to the tense atmosphere. Definitely a thrilling listen that kept me guessing! 🔪 Highly recommended!

I could not stop listening the reader was so good at drawing me in and Freida… Well Freida does it again is all I can say !!!!! Wow just when I thought she couldn’t get me with a twist she got me ! Unbelievable talent!

Just when I’m feeling in a book/podcast slump and need a pickup, Frieda to the rescue! Such a great escape and so entertaining!!
I agree with some other reviewers that this one was a bit different than her other books. Not as many wild, far-out there-plot twists, but this one was more realistic and thought provoking. I found myself so angry with some characters and felt so much despair for others. Really makes you wonder what you’d do in these situations.
Anyway, I loved it!! It was entertaining from start to finish! Thanks again Frieda for giving us a quick, but adventurous, escape from our own real world problems!

Honestly there hasn’t been a book by her I was completely engrossed with from the very beginning, and this is no exception. One would think after reading so many of her books, she wouldn’t still have the ability to fool me, but she gets me every time. I would have finished this in one listen if I didn’t have responsibilities 😂 I just love her writing style, and the way she’s able to lead us one way then completely flip it on its head and blow your mind. Highly recommend!
