This psychological thriller pulls you into the opulent, unsettling world of the Winchester household. Millie, a young woman with a past she's desperate to outrun, secures a coveted position as their live-in housemaid. The family - Nina, Andrew, and their daughter - presents a picture-perfect facade of wealth, but the cracks are immediate. Nina's behavior is volatile and strange, while Andrew moves through the mansion like a ghost of a man. Yet, Millie carries secrets far darker than the shadows in the Winchester halls, secrets she believes she has perfectly contained.
As the reader, we are kept in the dark about Millie's true history, a mystery that fuels the narrative. However, the reveal unfolds slowly, occupying a significant portion of the plot. While Nina's initial oddness is addressed, it serves merely as a prelude to deeper, more twisted truths. My main struggle was a lack of connection to any character. While the questions surrounding Millie's past and the family's dysfunction propelled me forward, the emotional anchor was missing, leaving my high expectations for a gripping thriller unmet.
The prose is accessible and the chapters are succinct, creating that deceptive "just one more page" rhythm. Their structure aims to build suspense, but for me, that crucial, nerve-fraying tension never truly materialized. The plot itself lacked intrigue for much of its journey.
The novel is divided into three distinct acts. The first, centered on Millie's entry into the house, dragged, testing my commitment to continue. The second act, shifting to Nina's perspective, is where the engine starts. Twists enter the narrative, offering genuine interest. By the third act, which rapidly alternates between the two women, the story accelerates to a conclusion that felt rushed. Millie's past is unveiled hastily, and the final confrontations wrap up with expediency that undermined the earlier buildup. It felt like a sprint to the finish line after a leisurely stroll.
Ultimately, The Housemaid didn't deliver the addictive, pulse-pounding experience its marketing promises. It's a book of uneven pacing - a slow-burning first act and a hastily concluded final act bookending a genuinely more compelling middle. The writing style is undeniably easy to digest. However, the absence of palpable tension and narrative urgency left me underwhelmed. I'm hesitant about continuing with the sequel.
Despite its flaws, the core mystery is engaging enough for a single read. If you're looking for a lightweight, plot-driven thriller to pass the time, you might find it here. For a truly immersive experience, I'd recommend the audiobook version, where a skilled narrator might inject the suspense that the prose sometimes lacks.

“The Housemaid” by Freida McFadden is just one of those novels that for years to come, I will speak highly of and recommend to anyone that wants an incredible thriller. One that’s also filled with mystery and psychological terror all wrapped together brilliantly. From McFadden’s excellent writing style to all the characters I absolutely loved, this is easily one of the best novels of 2025.

i absolutely loved listening to The Housemaid by Freida McFadden. The story is so gripping and full of twists that I couldn’t stop listening. The narrator does an amazing job bringing the characters to life, making it feel even more intense. Definitely a must-listen for fans of suspense and thrillers! 🔥

The Narration of Millie was a bit rough for a cute young girl. I thought she should have sounded a little more feminine.
The narrator then portrayed the wife and she sounded a lot better. Go figure. Should have been the opposite.
The story is really good, far fetched, but good. I was able to listen with enthusiasm waiting to hear what happens next.
It really doesn’t matter that’s it’s not realistic. It’s a book to read for fun and entertainment.

What a crazy tale of privilege, evil and mental illness. This book was easy to finish in an afternoon and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. What a wonderful and just right book to keep you guessing and wondering what was next. The twist in the end made me happy and scared with the MIL comments at the funeral. Creepy!!

Really good story. I literally could not put this one down. Ex-con gets a job as a Housemaid for a family with one child, a 9 year old girl. You don’t know why she was in prison, but she has trouble getting and keeping a job. She is living in her car when she gets the job as the live-in house keeper. The family is extremely wealthy, but her room is a former closet and the door lock is on the outside. The wife is bitchy and unpredictable and the husband is gorgeous and understanding. The 9 year old is a spoiled brat. All is not well in this house.
I highly recommend this audio recording!
