I just finished reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, and honestly, it was a breath of fresh air. As my first real step into the world of Middle-earth, I found it to be a charming, comforting, and genuinely beautiful read. I picked it up after a long hiatus from fantasy, looking for a fun way to get back into the habit of reading fiction. From the moment I decided to start it, I was excited, having only watched a single part of the LOTR trilogy and mercifully forgotten most of it. I was ready to start fresh.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, is the story of a hobbit, Mr. Bilbo Baggins. Hobbits are just one of the many fascinating species that lived in Middle-earth, a world set in a long-past version of our own, roughly during the Middle Ages in a region resembling the UK. But to say it's the story of a hobbit is to miss the point. It's the story of an adventure - an adventure he is roped into joining alongside a party of dwarves, another distinct species in this world. Tolkien's style is unique, and I gradually started liking it, even grinning occasionally at the way he described the happenings on the journey.
In my previous reads of fantasy or thrillers, authors usually try to hook you with cliffhangers at the end of a chapter. You become excited, eager to read further. Tolkien's writing is not like that at all. He often mentions events plainly before they occur, and then goes on to describe them in detail. I found this a bit surprising at first, when the Hobbit and the party "set out on an adventure." I had never seen a thrilling journey stretched across a year being summed up so literally as an "adventure". His writing is beautiful in a very different, almost nostalgic way.
Even before I talk about his writing, I had previously read about how elaborate the world of Middle-earth is. Tolkien didn't just write a story; he built a world. He included detailed maps in the book and even created an entire language - Elvish - that was supposedly spoken in that era. The book includes all the runes (similar to letters in English) and a short description of what they mean. That's the kind of detail that makes this world feel real.
I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. By enjoyed, I mean I laughed and smiled as I went on the journey with the party. The Hobbit was originally published as a children's book in 1937, but it soon gathered popularity among all ages. It also lays some of the stepping stones for the larger Lord of the Rings epic. There's magic in the form of Gandalf the Wizard, there's wrath in the form of Smaug the dragon, and a cast of characters you can't help but become attached to.
This year, I've stressed an obvious point that many seem to miss: read because you enjoy it. We often read for the sake of reading, ruining the point of the entire activity. Reading should be entertaining, soothing, calming, and fun! The Hobbit was all of that for me. Now I'm onto my next adventure - The Lord of the Rings.
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. I think that's the magic of it - the promise of comfort and adventure, all wrapped up in one.
This book is a wonderful, engaging read. If you're looking for a story to get lost in, I highly recommend it. The audio narration is fantastic if you're into that format, or curl up with the original. It's a world worth visiting.

I read the first book of TLOTR a few years ago and was completely underwhelmed by it. I certainly wouldn’t have read this, had me daughter not asked me to read it aloud to her. What a lucky thing that she did! This was genuinely heartwarming and full of adventure. Not a word was wasted (unlike in TLOTR, where entire chapters left my head swimming with unnecessary detail), and the characters – the entire hoard of them – were beautifully described.

A match made in heaven –
The Hobbit has always been a beloved story to me, but now it has gained a whole new dimension; a completely new way of experiencing it, as we get this narration that we’ve all been waiting for without even knowing it.
Andy Serkis brings a whole cast of distinct voices to this audiobook, and the pacing and drama of the storytelling is impeccable. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves fantasy, the world of LotR, or fairytales in general.
I hope with all my heart that we will soon get a new version of the Lord of the Rings, too – narrated by Andy Serkis. That would make this experience complete.
Serkis does Tolkien’s legacy justice –
My first encounter with JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit came when I was around six years old, and my mum picked up a paperback copy from which she read parts of to me. I do admit I was probably a little too young to appreciate this, back then, but I did go on to reading the book on my own when I was about 11 or 12. Which is also when I plunged headlong into The Lord of the Rings and knew from that moment that I wanted to be a fantasy writer.
I’m always somewhat baffled when people complain that The Hobbit is boring, but hey, there’s no accounting for people’s taste. But what I will say to those of you who didn’t quite gel with the reading, do give the audiobook narrated by Andy Serkis a try. It’s my firm belief that some fiction only truly comes alive as the spoken word, and in this case, The Hobbit is a prime example.
Tolkien is a master of the third person omniscient, so often interrupts the main flow to give a little of his own opinion – and sometimes the references to things from his own time, like football, can be a bit jarring. This is especially the case considering that the conventions of present day fiction favour a limited first- or third-person point of view. So I’m guessing the ‘narrator voice’ of the author might be off-putting to some readers (though I do believe that they don’t quite know how to articulate this, judging by the reviews out there – worth a laugh and an eye-roll if you’re trawling to see the one-star reviews for The Hobbit.)
But Andy Serkis as a narrator of this book surpasses himself. His minute details in characterisation, for everyone from Bilbo and Gandalf, to Smaug, and of course the Gollum we all know and love, are an absolute delight. This is the unabridged version of the book, so we’re looking at plus minus 10 hours of entertainment, and I’m beginning to wonder if Peter Jackson shouldn’t have just stuck to the plot instead of his mangling of the film adaption of the book. Because yes, there is enough content for three movies here, if you look hard enough.
This is most certainly one of my audiobook highlights of the year, and I cannot recommend it enough. Serkis is an absolute treasure and he has without a doubt done justice to JRR Tolkien’s legacy with his reading.
