The Green Mile. By Stephen King. Audiobook – My Review:
I read the complete paperback version of this book. Because it was originally published in six monthly installments, the narrative itself feels segmented. Stephen King's work typically flows with an effortless momentum - you look up and 100 pages have flown by. That wasn't my experience here, at least not for the first section.
The Green Mile, while a prison story, is nothing like Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. The book starts well, then rapidly picks up pace, pulling you into its world of grim details. The execution details on an electric chair are dark, and that's King's specialty. I read Desperation just before this, and I could still recall every character's traits. That wasn't the case with this one. Except for John Coffey and Percy Wetmore, the other characters' traits are lost to me.
Yes, Paul Edgecombe narrates the story, but you'll forget him in the events. Thankfully, the story didn't depend too much on the characters. It moved on the shoulders of beautiful narration.
Even when he fails, it's hard to spot. That's the skill of Stephen King.
I had the movie on my watchlist but I wanted to read the book first. Now that I'm done reading, I'll watch the movie as well.
Like every other Stephen King book, this too will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. Some scenes involving Percy Wetmore, Delacroix, and Mr. Jingles are intense. Delacroix's death is so intense you'll want to stop reading but you'll go on anyway. That's King doing what he does best.
The Writing
Stephen King writes in a manner and language as if he is having a good conversation with you. He doesn't complicate the process much. The storytelling is linear in style. It starts with a character and a scene and continues to its natural end. Unlike other linear stories, there's no deliberate beginning, middle, and end. With King, the progression is always effortless. When the story ends you'll feel it has run its course and that is the perfect ending.
Stephen King's ability to tell stories is a masterclass for all aspiring writers. Don't overcomplicate storytelling - just write the damn story.

An unforgettable and emotional novel. John Coffey has to be the sweetest character King has ever written along with Paul Edgecomb. The ending left me feeling emotionally numb because of the injustice that occurred. The movie adaptation of the novel series is just as good if not better. Personally, I rank this novel in the same level as IT and The Stand.

There is no comparison to The Green Mile. It has a truly unique storyline. Stylistically it is vary comparable to the rest of Stephen Kings books. King is a true master of character development.
What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He adds a voice and emotion, but if you have seen the movie it is impossible not to compare the narration with the movie.

This is a beautiful story with interesting characters. The reader is one of the best I have ever heard. It is the story of 1932 death row prison, the guards and the prisoners. A new prisoner comes on the block who is very large with a special gift.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Green Mile?
When Koffee says that the two girls died for love of each other. I had read this story years ago but that line and the explanation behind it has never left me.
What about Frank Muller’s performance did you like?
Frank’s performance could not have been better. His use of voice volume, articulating each word, and not rushing a scene were frosting on the cake to a great story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The story is touching and moved me with the power that empathy has for the characters.

This was a terrific audio book. The characters were well drawn, thestory was riveting and moving and nearly brought tears to my eyes, and the narration was flawless. I have never read nor listened to Stephen King before, and was very dubious about this book, but I was very, very pleased that I downloaded it.
