It has been a full decade since I last opened The Great Gatsby. My first encounter, like so many, was in a high school classroom - a place of divided loyalties where some classmates fell under its spell and others met it with stubborn resistance. What stayed with me then was the sheer magnetism of Fitzgerald's prose, the sharp clarity of Nick Carraway's narration, and a deep sense of outrage at the careless destruction left in the wake of the wealthy Buchanans. As for Jay Gatsby himself - the man who invented his own grandeur, all for the love of Daisy Buchanan - I confess, I wasn't quite sure what to make of him.

Returning to the novel in my twenties, I saw its complexities in a new light. My heart went out to Gatsby, the dreamer who stakes everything on a single, fragile hope. Now, reading it again in my late thirties, I am struck most by that "infinite hope" he embodies - the relentless, beautiful, and utterly futile belief in second chances. There's a part of me that still wants to believe him when he insists, "Can't repeat the past? ...Why of course you can!" - even though life has taught me otherwise. Nick's story is shadowed by darkness from its very first page, a forewarning of the tragedy that unfolds during that fateful Long Island summer of 1922...

...and yet, every time, I am swept up by the spectacle of this dreamer chasing a light that has already faded behind him.

Ask me what this novel is truly about, and I'll tell you it's a story of hope and haunting nostalgia. It's a dissection of class and the death of illusion, a meditation on memory and the roles we perform. Notice how I'm dancing around a simple plot summary? That's because reducing Fitzgerald's slim masterpiece to a series of events feels like a betrayal. He captures a world a century removed from ours - the roaring excess of Jazz Age New York - yet it thrums with anxieties that feel utterly contemporary: the myth of class mobility, the tensions of race and immigration, the hollow core of the so-called American Dream, and the peril of trying to resurrect a past that's gone for good. And despite the weight of these themes...

...with every rereading, I am lifted up by the sheer beauty of Fitzgerald's language, discovering new layers in a text that never gives up all its secrets at once.
