The God of the Woods
On an early morning in August 1975, a camp counselor makes a startling discovery: an unoccupied bunk. The missing occupant, Barbara Van Laar, is no ordinary thirteen-year-old—she is the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the local residents. This isn’t the first Van Laar child to disappear—her older brother vanished fourteen years earlier under similar circumstances, never to be found.
As a tense and frantic search unfolds, a captivating story of secrets and lies begins to emerge. Delving into the complex history of the Van Laar family and the working-class community that surrounds them, Moore’s layered narrative pulls readers into an intricate world of hidden truths and second chances. This novel stands as Liz Moore’s most daring and expansive work to date.

Praise for The God of the Woods:
“The God of the Woods, like The Secret History, transports readers so deeply into its richly peopled, ominous world that, for hours, everything else falls away… Breaking free of the spell Moore casts is close to impossible.” – Washington Post“This expertly paced thriller… has the kineticism of a well-crafted miniseries.” – The New Yorker
“Hugely satisfying… Moore cleverly guides us through that tangle of trails, to a thrilling and unexpected conclusion.” – Boston Globe
“Liz Moore’s extraordinary new literary suspense novel reminds me of Donna Tartt’s 1992 debut, The Secret History… [T]he vital connection for me was a reading experience where I was so thoroughly submerged in a rich fictional world, that for hours I barely came up for air… The precision of Moore’s writing never flags. . . . Unforgettable.” – Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR
“Her fictional summer camp felt as vivid to me as my own.” – The New York Times
“A long novel that at first is hard to put down. By page 200, impossible.” – Stephen King“An unusually gratifying reading experience… Three days after you turn the last page, your head is still half in it. It’s as if you can smell the pine and wood smoke… Moore has written an atmospheric family drama, a social novel and the best kind of missing persons story, one that’s fun to read and think about.” – Minneapolis Star Tribune
“Intercutting past and present, Moore keeps the suspense at a fever pitch amid nuanced portraits of the out-of-touch Van Laars, their hangers-on and the locals who both depend on and resent them. A winner.” – People

Kakutani Michiko –
“The God of the Woods” ranks among the most intelligent, surprising, and literary mysteries I’ve read in quite some time. Set at an Adirondack summer camp during the 1960s and 1970s, it centers around the disappearance of two children from wealthy New York State families: a boy in 1961 and a girl in 1975. The novel blends police procedural elements — and Liz Moore provides an exceptional detective in a sharp young woman whom the seasoned male detectives dismiss — with a deep character exploration of a privileged family hiding numerous secrets in their sprawling, walk-in closets. I was so captivated that I stayed up until two in the morning to finish this wonderful story. And since I’m writing this on the final day of the Olympics, I’ll just say: “wowza, Moore absolutely nails the ending.”

A mystery twofer told in dual timelines. One child who has gone missing in 1961: another 1975… Both are from the prestigious Van Laar family and owners of the camp. The setting is in the wooded area of the Adirondacks. But don’t be fooled by the beauty of the landscape. Something ugly is happening in these woods. This story is stacked with multiple characters, multiple scenarios and multiple suspects.
Believe the hype. 5⭐️!

Book Review –
Wow I had such a wonderful time reading The God of the Woods. Each character I felt personally drawn to and all the intertwined social dynamics. The book will keep you guessing until the end and it was so well written, unlike other mystery novels. I highly recommend this book.

This was a great story. Loved the arch and flow. Narration was amazing. A lot of characters and I admit I got lost and had to back track a few times, but that is more due to having distractions from my two children at home during summer break. I highly recommend. Some interesting twists to the plot. Would make a good movie.
