Let me be frank: I usually steer clear of epistolary novels. I often find the format restrictive, leaving the world of the story feeling thin and the characters distant.
The Correspondent shattered that bias for me. Virginia Evans wields the letter-writing format not as a limitation, but as a powerful lens. From the very first page, I was utterly immersed in the world of Sybil Van Antwerp - a world that is messy, deeply vulnerable, and profoundly human. Evans builds a stunningly vivid character without a single line of traditional dialogue, which is nothing short of a narrative triumph.
The story centers on Sybil, a 73-year-old retired lawyer whose primary occupation is now correspondence. She writes to everyone: family, friends, even celebrities like George Lucas. But her most raw and revealing letters are addressed to one person - letters she never sends. back but not all of them are friendly. This is told in epistolary form which I’m not usually a fan of, but wow, did this one work… Sybil is reflecting on her life as she moves through her ‘winter’. The connections she has made and what they meant to her. As she struggles with going blind, she fears what will become of her correspondences, her relationships. She empties her life into these letters- her love, her grief, and her hope.

Ann said most epistolary novels don’t work. But that this one does. Personally I’ve only read one epistolary novel prior to this…Kate & Frida, also recommended by Parnassus staff, and I thought it was fabulous. I’ve also read one non fiction epistolary book… 84 Charing Cross Road, which is honestly the gold standard.
Anywho. The Correspondent, its many many narrators, its various redemptive arcs, and its characters…really really well done. I didn’t want it to end.

This book, told in letters to and from Sybil is such a beautiful story. Even though the letters only span a few years of her life, the full picture unfolds to us through the correspondence. I laughed, and I cried several times throughout my listening. The performance of each of the narrators was very good.
