Refreshingly honest and powerfully crafted, my debut novel delivers a raw, new perspective on girlhood and the turbulent path to adulthood. It fearlessly examines power structures and the profound wounds left by childhood neglect, establishing itself as an essential and genuine read.
While I first gained fame playing the aggressively comedic Sam Puckett on Nickelodeon's iCarly and Sam & Cat, my public story shifted in 2022. That's when I stepped away from acting and published my memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died. Readers were shown the behind-the-scenes reality of my life as a child star, my complex relationship with my mother, and my journey with eating disorders, and they embraced my honesty. Half His Age, while a work of fiction, echoes that same vulnerable truth. It draws from my own past, including a relationship with a much older man when I was eighteen, which I've spoken about openly.
The story centers on Waldo, a teenager, and her obsessive, all-consuming crush on her creative writing teacher, Mr. Korgy. I aimed to explore the fury of girls and the confusing, often painful, nature of what a girl believes love to be. Waldo's only role model is her mother, who advised her as a young girl that "the best way to keep a man is to be as pretty as possible." I portray the profound loneliness and lack of guidance that Waldo faces, often left alone at night, filling the emptiness with an addiction to online shopping and an unhealthy attachment to her teacher. This lack of support forces her to mature too quickly, becoming the emotional caretaker for her mother's unstable moods.
Many stories about relationships between older men and younger girls have been criticized for romanticizing the power imbalance and the emotional abuse. In my writing, I aim to show the subtle, predatory nature of this dynamic. He is always "Mr. Korgy," a constant reminder of the power imbalance and the confusion, never a first name, a sign of the control he exerts. This is evident when Waldo herself says, "I'm sorry I'm so immature. I guess that's what happens when you date an eighteen-year-old." My portrayal of the emotional manipulation within this situation makes for a heart-wrenching read.
My first book is a darkly funny look at desire and destruction, and a heartbreaking glimpse into the way a vulnerable young girl can be exploited by those in power. This book is my story.

I might have screamed a little when I got my hands on this ARC. I refused to read it quickly though I really wanted to. It was so worth the savor. I love all things about Louise Penny’s writing. The nuggets of truth hidden among poetry that allows you to reflect and remember; the delightfully twisting and turning story line with imperfect people; the most perfect village in the world that we all want to return home to- I most very much enjoyed this latest book. It was worth the slow read and had all my most favorite things. I’m very much looking forward to sharing this with friends. Love love loved it.

I think Louise Penny has outdone herself in writing this book. It describes how what everyone thinks about happening to the last detail. How does she do it. She takes Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, Isabelle Lacoste and all the others and makes them into targets of the invaders. Then she turns around and makes them the good guys without taking anything away from them. It really makes it interesting and intriguing at the same time. She has a way of dining this without cramping her style and making things turn out how they should in Gamache’scircle.
