It felt like the right moment to shift gears with my book reviews. This whole reviewing project was born from our virtual book club last year, a quarantine lifeline. One title kept surfacing in our discussions: The Alchemist. It was a complete blind spot for me. My curiosity piqued, I looked it up and was genuinely surprised I'd missed it. The premise sounded perfectly aligned with my tastes.

The book was published in 1988 and soared to fame in the early '90s. That period found me freshly out of college, diving headfirst into launching my teaching career. Recreational reading, sadly, fell by the wayside. Looking back, I see a missed opportunity. I believe encountering this story in my twenties could have been profoundly impactful.

The Alchemist unfolds as a fable, following a shepherd boy named Santiago. A recurring dream pulls him from the Spanish countryside on an epic quest to the Egyptian pyramids. His mission is twofold: to find a physical treasure and, more importantly, to discover his "Personal Legend." His path is shaped by a series of encounters - with a gypsy, a king, a thief, an Englishman, a desert woman, and finally, an alchemist. Each figure becomes a crucial guide, offering the wisdom and courage he needs to continue when doubt and hardship threaten to end his journey.

At its heart, this is a story about tenacity and the pursuit of one's dreams. Santiago embodies the principle of listening to your heart. He teaches us that obstacles are not necessarily dead ends, but often essential detours on the right path. What resonated with me most was Santiago's open spirit. He meets every person without prejudice, even those who mean him harm. He learns to interpret the world's omens, using them to navigate toward his destiny and ultimately, uncover his treasure.

After finishing, I posted my brief thoughts on Goodreads and then delved into other reviews. I discovered this book is strikingly polarizing. Readers seem to either adore it or dismiss it entirely. While that divisiveness doesn't shock me, I personally struggle to find a reason for disdain. It's a succinct novel, and I'm certain it's one I'll revisit.

I liked this book. Had I read it in my twenties or thirties, I suspect I would have loved it. It serves as a potent reminder that life's path is a series of peaks and valleys, but the essential thing is to keep moving forward. It's a call to resilience, a nudge to never abandon our deepest aspirations. In a world that can often feel discouraging, a book that offers genuine hope is always a book worth reading.
