Anticipation
This novel stood as one of my most eagerly awaited releases of the quarter. With glowing early reviews praising this deep dive into Haymitch's past, my expectations soared. As someone who adored the original trilogy and its first prequel, I was also genuinely craving a story I could lose myself in. Surely, Suzanne Collins wouldn't let us down.
Character Revelation
We first met Haymitch as the jaded, perpetually drunk mentor to Katniss and Peeta - a man who seemed to have buried all his cares. This story completely recontextualizes him. We meet the boy he was before the arena: a young man who cared fiercely for his family, his friends, and even the fellow tributes fate forced upon him. The brutality of the 50th Hunger Games - and the Capitol's cruelty that was already in full, vicious swing - methodically strips that boy away. Collins holds nothing back in her excavation of his psyche, or in her ruthless treatment of the new tributes we meet. Alongside them, we're reunited with familiar faces whose earlier chapters now feel profoundly different.
Narrative Flow
True to Collins's style, the prose is effortlessly accessible and propulsive. I found myself so absorbed that chapter breaks became irrelevant - I simply flowed from one scene to the next. Whether a feature of my e-reader or a testament to the pacing, I consumed this book in what felt like a single, compelling breath. The chapters, while likely of standard length, felt seamless, creating a narrative current that was impossible to resist.
Depth Within the Structure
Yes, the plot's framework will feel familiar: the Reaping, the training, the arena. But to call it repetitive misses the point entirely. This series has always been about the devastating themes beneath the spectacle, and this installment is no exception. The Capitol's grotesque oppression is palpable from the first page, and the seed of rebellion it plants in Haymitch is agonizing to witness. We feel every ounce of his suffering under Snow's manipulations. This is where the book truly shines: it's a powerful fusion of plot and profound character study, focusing intently on how the Capitol's machinations warp a soul.
My Take
Sunrise on the Reaping delivered everything I hoped for and more. I was hooked immediately, and the origin story for Haymitch's trilogy-era actions is both heartbreaking and masterfully explained. I loved the story, learning all about the past lives of the people we see in all the other hunger games books. It closes some plot lines and opens tons of other ones for you to think about. A good narrator, but he could use a bit more emotion. Definitely recommend!

OK, I’m crying. This was hands-down, the best book out of the entire Hunger Games series. Aside from the edge-of-your seat action we have come to expect in the Arena, this tale allows the reader to get up close to Haymitch, to understand why Haymitch is so surly, and to confront the trauma in the Arena along with the Boy Who Lived to Teach the Girl on Fire. This story is political, it’s important, and it teaches us that even in the midst of horrific circumstances, we can persevere. We will persevere. What a truly timely message as we witness the beginning of our own DOGE Days. I mean completely normal and not-at-all Dark Days.
