Let's get one thing straight from the get-go - this review of Prince Harry's SPARE is less a formal critique and more a personal commentary. When a book saturates the public conversation, I find it more interesting to share a perspective than to simply rehash the plot.
I came to this book with what most would call a 'casual' awareness of Prince Harry. I knew the major headlines - the engagement, the exit, the media's vitriol toward Meghan - but I'm not a royal-watcher. I'm more of a 'headline-clicker' than a 'biographer'.
My interest wasn't to read a tell-all, but rather to hear an autobiography from a man who, in his own words, wanted to "tell his own story." And let's be clear - this is his story, and it is as a story about his life, much like his and Meghan's Netflix documentary. He is acutely aware that he is only giving his side of the story. And yet, I was struck by his vulnerability rather than his anger. He could have used this space to simply tear down the press who tormented him. He chose instead to share his life.
I was genuinely surprised by the sheer space he dedicates to his military career. For many readers, this is a slower, less glamorous part of the book. Objectively, however, it is essential to the man he became - it gave him purpose, forged a new brotherhood, and gave him a sanctuary from the paparazzi that his life in London never could.
His candor on his mental health is the book's greatest strength. Considering the environment in which he grew up, it is a miracle he is as functional as he is. This is not a book about atonement, which is where some readers have expressed disappointment. He does not dwell on the worst of his mistakes, like the Nazi uniform. He mentions it, and he discusses the important discussions he had afterward. He is clearly aware of its gravity.
Which brings me to my main point - can we just let a human be human? We as a society are so quick to cancel someone for a past mistake, even if they have shown growth since the event. I am not apologizing for his past actions. I am suggesting we be compassionate enough to allow a person the space to reflect on his own life without demanding he also fix every social injustice. He wrote this book, I believe, as a path to heal - not as a platform for every cause.
We can never know what work someone has done on themselves. Do we really need everything laid bare? In a world where every word can be twisted, perhaps a little grace is in order.
Ultimately, I found SPARE to be a surprisingly compelling read. It's a deeply human story - flawed, emotional, and yes, at times, messy. I can't speak to its historical accuracy, but I can attest to its raw emotional honesty. If you're looking for a story about a man who grew up in a gilded cage and fought to find his own way, this book is absolutely worth your time. I highly recommend it, and the audiobook, narrated by Harry himself, is particularly powerful.

Extraordinary and heartbreaking –
After reading over 2000 audiobooks, and thousand more paper books, this is my first ever review. The book is extraordinarily heartfelt, and the reading by the author helps the book to come to life. I have never been happier with a new book, and that is truly saying something. I highly recommend the book not because of the identity of the author, but because of the heartbreaking, frank, emotional, funny, and loving memoir that we now all get to explore – as well as getting a chance to explore our own part in the memoir, as consumers of tabloid culture.

After decades of hearing his story through his toxic family and the British press, it’s time to actually listen to him.
For anyone that has dealt with toxic family, the core of his story is surprisingly relatable.
Hopefully more people will look beyond the tabloid narrative and the carpet bomb reviews to actually listen.
