Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in his color-coded society. He toils deep beneath the surface of Mars, believing he and his people are sacrificing their lives to make the planet livable for future generations. He works willingly, trusting his blood and sweat will one day mean a better world for his children.
But it is all a lie. Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. He soon learns humanity reached the surface of Mars generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks already exist there. Reds like him are nothing more than slaves - a cheap labor force for a decadent ruling class, the Golds.
Driven by a longing for justice and the memory of a lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a brutal proving ground for the dominant Gold caste. To survive, he will be forced to compete for his life and the future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. To bring down his enemies, he must become one of them.
As a fan of dystopian fiction, I found Red Rising to be a massive hit. The core premise is a powerful one: a people lied to their entire lives, working for a future that already exists. Eo, a young woman who dreams for more, sparks a revolution with her sacrifice. It transforms Darrow from a placid young man into a force of nature, a man whose grief and rage finally live up to his deep and red caste.
What makes this book so compelling is how it subverts expectations. The synopsis hints at the journey, but the actual narrative takes thrilling and unexpected turns. Darrow's character development is masterful; we witness his evolution from a man who simply endures to a revolutionary who dares to try and drive change.
The world-building is exceptional, blending dystopia and science-fiction in a way that feels both familiar and strikingly unique. The contrast between the technologically advanced Gold society and the oppressed, primitive existence of the Reds is stark and effective.
