I finally cracked its spine this month and was utterly captivated by the end of the first chapter.

What pulled me in immediately was Garmus's distinct, arresting prose. A unique authorial voice feels like an endangered species in today's mainstream fiction, and discovering one is a genuine event. Frankly, holding my full attention has never been harder. Between late-night doomscrolling, Bravo marathons, and a TikTok algorithm that owns a piece of my soul, my reading time is under constant siege.

But my most formidable opponent yet? My newborn daughter. Nothing - not even the most addictive social media feed - has challenged my annual reading goal like a tiny human who prefers my shoulder to her bassinet and views sleep as a negotiable concept. In the bleary haze of 3 a.m. feedings, diaper changes of mythical proportions, and the frankly unhinged lullabies I improvise to ward off crying, finishing this book felt like a necessary act of personal preservation. Reading Elizabeth Zott's story wasn't just entertainment; it was sustenance.

For the uninitiated, here's the premise: It's the early 1960s. Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant, uncompromising chemist, battles blatant misogyny at the Hastings Research Institute. Her sole ally is the brilliant, Nobel-nominated Calvin Evans, a man who falls in love with - of all things - her formidable mind. Life, however, is as unpredictable as a chemical reaction. Years later, Elizabeth is a single mother and the unlikely star of America's top cooking show, Supper at Six. Her scientific approach to cuisine ("combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride") revolutionizes the kitchen and, more importantly, empowers her female viewers to question the world around them.

Yes, the narrative occasionally veers into the territory of wish-fulfillment, offering a more idealized version of history than we lived. Yet, these moments are powerfully grounded by the novel's unflinching threads of grief, trauma, and simmering frustration. Sometimes, we need that kind of escapism - a story where a brilliant woman outsmarts the sexist systems designed to hold her back, not with magic, but with sheer, undeniable intellect and will.

Call Lessons in Chemistry a 'feel-good' read if you must, but know this: it has bite. It's a novel with teeth - not fangs, perhaps, but a set strong enough to leave a lasting impression.
