So there's this little fantasy-romance book (sorry, "romantasy") out right now called Iron Flame - you may have heard of it? Ha. Just kidding. Rebecca Yarros' blockbuster sequel to her global phenomenon, Fourth Wing, hit shelves in early November. And judging by my social media feeds, I'm pretty sure 99% of the world's population has already finished it. So, I'll skip the long preamble and get right to the point.
...but not before this quick commercial break (also known as the plot summary, straight from the book's jacket):
"Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet's already wondering how she'll get through. It's not just that it's grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it's designed to stretch the riders' capacity for pain beyond endurance. It's the new vice commandant, who's made it his personal mission to to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is-unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet's body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else's, she still has her wits-and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules. But a determination to survive won't be enough this year, because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College-and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end."
My Verdict on Iron Flame? It's complicated.
When I read Fourth Wing, I was struck by how well it delivered its twisty, heartfelt, and accessible fantasy. I loved it. But I also felt the writing was overly simplistic and the world-building was a bit thin. I went into Iron Flame hoping it would build on that foundation, adding the complexity, better dialogue, and richer world-building the series deserves. So, does the sequel accomplish that? Well... not quite. But there's a lot I enjoyed.
The Good:
- Action on action on action. Like the third act of Fourth Wing, the pace here is relentless. It's a non-stop ride. While some character dynamics and subplots can feel repetitive, the core story always feels like it's moving forward.
- Xaden's extreme "I'd destroy the world to save you" energy. If you're a fan of morally gray characters (hello, it's me), then you're in luck. That aspect of his personality is amped up to eleven. And yes, it sometimes feels like too much. But the red-hot chemistry between him and Violet remains the core of the book's magnetic appeal.
- Exciting plot reveals. A lot happens in this book - a lot. To say the plot is packed would be an understatement. We have siblings back from the dead, a greedy king, perilous mountain journeys, vengeful dragons... the list goes on.
- A much-needed change(s) of scenery. While the first book takes place almost entirely at the War College, Iron Flame takes us to abandoned mountain palaces, remote border settlements, a kingdom outside of Navarre, and other dangerous places. A fresh setting helps break things up and keeps it interesting.
The Bad:
- The dialogue. It's still a weak point. Characters often explain things to each other in ways that feel unnatural. They talk at each other rather than having a real conversation.
- The editing. It feels rushed. The narrative could have used a few more passes to smooth out character arcs and plot threads. The dialogue would have benefited immensely from a stronger showing vs telling approach.
In the end: Iron Flame is highly entertaining, but it's a letdown from the thrilling heights of the first book. I'm not giving up on this series by any means, but it feels like this book was rushed out to capitalize on the fervor around Fourth Wing. My hope is that the third book gets the time it needs to breathe, so it can be the enthralling, brutal, rip-roaring adventure this world deserves to be.

I admit, the pacing was slower than the first but after a second, third. and fourth re-listen (yes I’ve listened 4 times within a week of release) I’ve grown more and more appreciative of the way Yarros has laid out this book. The level of planning, the plot twists, the character building, and angst between our protagonists are nothing short of spectacular. The story is well written with new details standing out each time I re-listened to this book. This world is so captivating and I am all in.

I’m actually surprised I finished this audio book, the story is the ONLY thing that kept me listening because the narration was awful. Parts felt like she was reading them for the first time and her voice didn’t convey what was going on. The deep breaths, page turning, mic bumps, long puases, running 9ut of air while in the middle of a sentence, inconsistent voices and tones for characters were driving me crazy throughout! really feel like I would have enjoyed this and the first book more if I had just read them.
