This narrative stretches far beyond the familiar beats of Poseidon's assault, Athena's curse, and her eventual beheading (Perseus is pointedly never named, as Gray notes in her afterword). While themes of violation and consent recur, Gray's focus is sharp on the corrosive power dynamics and manipulation that fuel rape culture.
