The story follows teenage Waldo and her impulsive, all-consuming infatuation with her creative writing teacher, Mr. Korgy. I wanted to explore female rage and the confusing, often painful, ideas of love that shape a young girl's world. Waldo's only guide is her mother, who told her from the age of five that "the best way to keep a man is to be as pretty as you can be." I portray Waldo's profound loneliness and lack of support - often home alone at night, filling the void with online shopping and an unhealthy fixation on her teacher. This parental absence forces her to grow up too fast, becoming the caretaker for her mother's volatile emotions.

Many stories about age-gap relationships have been criticized for romanticizing grooming and abuse. In my novel, I intentionally and subtly underscore the uncomfortable, predatory nature of this dynamic from the start. He is always "Mr. Korgy," never granted a first name, a constant reminder of the power imbalance. This is hammered home when Waldo herself says, "I'm sorry I'm so immature. I guess that's what happens when you date an eighteen-year-old," highlighting her heartbreaking childishness. Though Waldo doesn't see it, the abuse is clear: their meetings almost always lead to secretive sexual encounters. He even manipulates the narrative, blaming Waldo for initiating things, despite his role as her teacher and his pattern of seeking her out alone. My portrayal of this emotional manipulation makes for a subtly devastating yet crucial narrative.

Despite the dark themes, I haven't abandoned my comedic roots. The novel is hilariously sharp, packed with one-liners that propel you through the chapters. Waldo's cynical takes on her job at Victoria's Secret and navigating a world dominated by social media create a flawed but deeply relatable character. Through simple, brilliant lines like, "it's nice to believe that the only difference between me and Margot Robbie is a stick of blush," you can't help but be charmed page after page. This humor is vital - it fleshes out Waldo's voice and makes you root for her fiercely, even as her world unravels.

My first foray into fiction is a darkly funny, utterly addictive story that digs into desire and self-destruction. It offers a heartbreaking look at how vulnerable young girls can be exploited by those who hold power over them. This isn't just a story I wrote - it's a truth I'm telling.
