Great Big Beautiful Life
Alice Scott remains an eternal optimist, still holding onto the hope of her big breakthrough in writing. Hayden Anderson, on the other hand, is a Pulitzer-winning force of nature – an intense, often stormy personality. Both of them find themselves on the warm, inviting shores of Little Crescent Island, drawn there for the same purpose: to chronicle the life of a woman who hasn’t been seen in years – or at least to meet the octogenarian claiming to be Margaret Ives.
Once a tragic heiress, a tabloid princess, and the daughter of one of the most infamous (and scandal-ridden) families of the twentieth century.
When Margaret extends an invitation for a one-month trial period – promising to select the person best suited to tell her story – three factors keep Alice focused and determined.
First: Alice genuinely enjoys connecting with people, which usually earns her their trust – and she has a whole month to win over this elusive woman.
Second: She’s fully prepared for this opportunity and eager to impress her perpetually skeptical family with a serious, impactful publication.
Third: Hayden Anderson, who arguably has little reason to worry about losing this project, is giving her a piercing, tense stare that hints he perceives her as direct competition.
However, the challenge is that Margaret only shares fragments of her story with each of them. Fragments they’re forbidden from exchanging due to strict NDA agreements – and an undeniable, electric attraction that sparks whenever they’re in the same room.
It’s increasingly obvious that their version of the story – just like Margaret’s own narrative – could turn out to be a mystery, a tragedy, or a love story, depending entirely on who’s telling it.

“Henry has become the master of the contemporary romance novel.” – The Los Angeles Times“Readers can count on Em-Hen to transport them to a kinder, sunnier, and funnier galaxy where happy endings can be counted on… Henry’s magic elixir, it seems, is to return again and again to a simple boy-meets-girl formula while writing textured novels populated with vivid characters that never feel formulaic: she takes us back to a time when we believed, with all our being, that love conquers all” – The Boston Globe

Emma Smith –
If anyone saw a girl crying in her car as she passed exit 428 on the 5 freeway today, that was me listening to Julia Whelan read the last sentence of this book. Thank god for Emily Henry’s great big beautiful words.
I will be back at some point to talk about the way EmHen absolutely bodied the craft of weaving together, like, six different character arcs into that spectacular conclusion but for now I’m going to lay on the floor and stare at the ceiling and think about my life.
(And yes this is now my favorite Emily Henry book, Hayden + Alice I love you so much)

I really enjoyed this audiobook, and I highly recommend it!
Always so powerfully and beautifully crafted –
Emily Henry knows how to write family dynamics and love stories tho at sweep you off your feet and make you cry. As a mom to a daughter with a heart defect the mention of it caught me off guard, but it was so sweetly inter-woven through the story it gave me new words to describe exactly how it feels to know how each day is a gift and what are the priorities of life. A really good story about family and second chances.
Excellent Julia Whelan performance again! –
Julia Whelan’s exceptional narration carries this book. I’d rate the story 4/5 overall. This book focuses heavily on the third main character, which at times made the pacing feel slow. While I’ve enjoyed all of Emily Henry’s books (and have listened to them all), this wasn’t my favorite. I felt the romance between the two main characters developed too quickly that initially lacked the depth needed to feel truly believable.

Emily Henry always breaks my heart and opens my world. Like all her stories, her characters unfold, exposing their imperfections, misunderstandings, beauty and humanity. It’s a love story, inside a love story, inside another love story. Beautiful.
