As a critic who watches trends take flight, I couldn't ignore the fervor. For months, the rallying cry from Sarah J. Maas's legion echoed across social media: "Read Fourth Wing." Rebecca Yarros's debut into the 'Empyrean' series - a promised blend of dragonriders, enemies-to-lovers tension, and shadowy political machinations - became the must-have fantasy of the season. After a genuine hunt (the sell-out status was real), I secured my copy and devoured it in one sun-drenched weekend. The central question hung in the air, as potent as dragonfire: is this a propulsive, original adventure, or a polished echo of the genre's greatest hits?
The truth, I found, lives in the middle. But first, let's set the stage with the publisher's own stakes:
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to join the quiet Scribe Quadrant, a life devoted to books and history. Her mother, the commanding general of Navarre, has other plans. She orders Violet into the brutal dragon rider's quadrant, where hundreds compete for a bond with the few willing dragons. Violet is physically fragile in a place where the slightest weakness means a fiery death. I'll admit, "graduate or die" resonated on a personal level - my own father offered similar, if less lethal, motivation during finals week. But for Violet, the phrase is a literal contract.
My initial impression? I struggled to see past 'Divergent with dragons.' While marketed as adult fantasy, the novel's soul feels deeply rooted in YA conventions, just with characters aged into their twenties. The hype touted a singular world, but I found the scaffolding familiar.
Consider the archetypes: a society sorted into rigid quadrants (Scribe, Healer, Infantry, Rider) mirroring faction tropes. We have an unlikely female Chosen One, a brooding, dark-haired mentor battling his attraction, vicious peers plotting her demise, familial disapproval, and systemic corruption. The DNA of The Hunger Games and Red Queen is palpable here.
And yet - here's the pivot - the book is an undeniable blast. It is absorbing, strategically spicy, and relentlessly fun. Fun enough to make the echoes of its predecessors fade into a satisfying hum. To put it plainly: it rips.
While I spotted the final twist from a dragon's flight away, Yarros executes it with a twisty complexity that lands with genuine heart. One particular character's fate walloped me with unexpected emotion. The start is deliberate, carefully laying the groundwork of Navarre, dragon lore, and Violet's web of alliances. But once Violet is thrust into the lethal crash-course of dragon bonding, the narrative ignites. The action, stakes, and pace skyrocket, culminating in a final act that is a non-stop, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride.
Fourth Wing isn't groundbreaking. But let's be clear: not every novel needs to reinvent the wheel to provide immense value. In fact, a story walking a well-trod path faces a tougher battle to feel fresh and win reader investment. In my view, Rebecca Yarros doesn't just meet that challenge - she soars past it on dragon-back.

i’ll tell you what. it’s this book. besties let me just start with saying i am a romance/dark romance girly through and through. the only other fantasy books i’ve ever read were the acotar books and that series was so good. easily one of my favorite series ever, but fourth wing? it was even better literal chefs kiss i was hooked from the very first sentence to the very last. i’ve read one of rebecca’s romance books and i loved it, but her writing fantasy?! she ate that up and left zero crumbs. this is easily one of my top reads of 2023. fourth wing was action packed and the romance was amazing.

I really enjoyed listening to Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. The story is full of adventure, strong characters, and emotional depth. The narration brought the world to life, making it easy to get lost in the plot. A fantastic listen that kept me hooked from start to finish! ✨ Highly recommend for fantasy lovers.

Such a good book, awful narration –
Loved the story line, but the narration made the book hard to understand sometimes. Voices were hard to differentiate and were inconsistent. Her lack of punctuation at times made it difficult to understand if something was being said out loud or in Violets head. There were also multiple times when background noises in the audio were were distracting. Multiple times I couldn’t understand certain words because they were garbled. I hope they get a new one for the next book cause she isn’t good and this series is fire.

At first Fourth Wing didn’t catch my eye at all but I decided to read it after seeing a reel on bookstagram. It was on my list but I heard it had some of my favorite tropes and it did not disappoint! I really enjoyed the details of the world building and everything that happened. The characters were also great, and I’m glad they weren’t strictly black and white morally. I look forward to buying the physical copy to reread!
My only complaint is the narration, the female narrator did well but I didn’t really like the male narrator they threw in the end. I get the point they were trying to make by changing the point of view but he sounded too old? He didn’t sound too bad it just threw off my image of a character.

This story has all the elements I love in fantasy romance. We have dragons, magic, a heroine with a disability and an “enemies to lovers” romance. From the very first chapter, the author hooked me and kept me listening. When I wasn’t listening, I was thinking about it and now that I am done, I am left counting the days until the next release. l love that kind of book high.
I want to talk about the audiobook itself. Rebecca Soler narrates and does a stellar job of not only voicing the characters but of capturing the emotions and tone of the story. Her voices are such that I immediately recognized characters. Teddy Hamilton narrates near the end of the book, giving us Xaden’s perspective and gave a wonderful performance. However, the Recorded Books finished copy had editing issues. From hard swallows not being edited out to dead space. These infractions pulled me out of the story. It was a tremendous disappointment. I am hoping more care is given with the next audiobook.
