Yet while it's now rare and treatable in wealthy nations, in poorer regions it remains a rising and often fatal threat.

Many know John Green as the author of landmark young adult novels - my daughter Phoebe would certainly agree, having insisted I read The Fault in Our Stars. So some were surprised when he announced a book focused on global health and a disease many consider historical.

I was not. I first met John over a decade ago on a Gates Foundation trip to Ethiopia. Our conversations grappled with the very questions at the heart of this book: why does your birthplace dictate your chance of survival, and what can be done? Since then, he has been an invaluable partner, bringing his unique curiosity and clarity to our work while becoming a powerful advocate in his own right. I know no one else who could transform a book about tuberculosis into a #1 bestseller.

Everything Is Tuberculosis is poignant, sharp, and at times deeply frustrating. Its narrative anchor is Henry, a boy Green met at a clinic in Sierra Leone. Henry showed classic symptoms at age six, but initial tests failed him, sending him home. By the time of a correct diagnosis, he was gravely ill.

His treatment was a brutal marathon of outdated antibiotics - months of pills, painful injections, and debilitating side effects. Adherence is critical but often impossible; treatment can mean walking miles to a clinic, losing income, facing stigma, and falling into debt. Despite his mother's devotion, Henry's treatment was interrupted, and his TB became drug-resistant.

Henry’s story, ultimately, is one of fragile luck. His doctors refused to give up, battling to secure him a personalized drug regimen - a rarity for children in poor countries. That fight saved his life. Today, Henry is not just surviving but thriving in university, sharing his journey on YouTube. Green avoids framing this as a miracle. Instead, he presents it as evidence: TB is curable, effective care works, and the central question is whether we will make that care universally available.

Green captures the acute urgency of this moment, detailing how a forgotten disease still claims over a million lives annually - a number poised to grow. Recent cuts to foreign aid are devastating TB programs globally. Henry might not be alive without organizations like Partners In Health, supported by U.S. aid. These cuts will mean more lost lives, more interrupted treatments, more drug resistance, and costlier global threats.

This book confronts the core paradox of global health today: as Green writes, “the cure is where the disease is not, and the disease is where the cure is not.”

A book on tuberculosis risks being dry, but Green masterfully weaves in its bizarre and sweeping history - from the myth of it being a "white" disease to its alleged link to creative genius and its impact on Victorian beauty standards. This is his signature gift: making people care deeply about subjects they never thought were for them.

He concludes with a powerful call to action, framing the fight against TB not as a scientific puzzle, but a moral imperative. I agree wholeheartedly. Yet, I see more grounds for hope than the book fully explores.

While Green rightly critiques past failures - slow progress, high drug prices, glaring inequality - he spends less time on the future. Having invested in TB science for 25 years through our foundation, I’ve witnessed a different narrative. I know what breakthroughs are nearing the finish line.

We are closer than ever to tools that could revolutionize TB care: shorter regimens, better diagnostics, and potential vaccines. Their impact hinges on affordability and access for patients like Henry. We must acknowledge that the pharmaceutical companies often criticized for pricing are also the ones who have invested in this neglected disease. The path forward requires continued partnership, sustained innovation, and driving costs down.

If we stay the course, we can make Henry’s survival story the rule, not the exception - and finally relegate tuberculosis to the history books where it belongs.
