This story is told from the dual perspectives of Rowan and Sloane. This technique should, in theory, let us get to know them intimately. It doesn't. The characters are poorly written, and by the end, I still didn't know anything about them. To me, they feel like they lack any background story, especially Sloane. Rowan gets some backstory, but it was uninteresting as well. They both have day jobs and travel a lot to kill. They kill a lot, but why? Their motives are a mystery. The characters are so poorly executed, I was unable to feel any emotional connection to them, nor did I feel the chemistry. The romance is completely unfounded.
The dialogues and interactions are cringy and juvenile, which is a huge letdown for me. The author didn't make me care about who Rowan and Sloane were, and that's the biggest failure for a romance where the characters are the building blocks of the book.
Unfortunately, the plot wasn't any better. In fact, this book barely contains any plot at all. The murders, which should bring more tension to the story, were actually pretty boring. The author uses big time jumps, which were difficult to define while reading. I was confused a lot. Because the characters are written poorly, the plot automatically is as well. I really don't get where the hype for this book is coming from, because the writing is as bad as the dialogue and interactions in this book.
The only positive is the audiobook narration. Narrators Joe Arden and Lucy Rivers really bring this book to life, even though it's poorly executed. They don't 'just narrate' it, but really interact with each other. This audiobook is more like a graphic audiobook and that really fits the story. The only positive aspect is the audiobook narration.
Apparently, I somehow expected this, but I hoped for a different outcome for Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver. The synopsis sounded intriguing enough, but the execution of this story was poor in every single aspect. The characters were shallow, their development non-existent. This is one of the building blocks in books within the romance genre, and if this is lacking, the plot automatically is as well. Add pretty poor writing to the mix and you get what I mean. I really didn't enjoy this reading experience at all.

This is a book that will either hook you immediately or push you away just as fast. It's a polarizing read. However, the overall premise is undeniably interesting. If you find yourself intrigued, I recommend listening to the audiobook. The narrators do an incredible job elevating the material, turning a weak read into a compelling performance. Give it a listen or a read if you're curious to see which camp you fall into.

This is a DARK romcom with very gory parts (so check your triggers) but even in many of those times, it’s laugh out loud funny. I never thought I’d find serial unalivers so endearing!! Loved Rowan’s devotion to Sloane. 😍
