Meet Tiernan, our male lead, who we first encounter in a brutally memorable scene: having his eye removed by the brothers of our female protagonist, Lila. Tiernan lives up to the series' name - he is a villain, through and through. As the prince of the Irish Mafia, he's earned the moniker "Deathless," a title whose chilling significance unravels as the story progresses.

To shield her from being used as a pawn in a future mafia alliance, her mother fabricated a cruel ruse, convincing their world that Lila is both physically disabled and mentally childlike. For those who venture into these pages, Bad Bishop offers a relentless, twist-filled narrative. It's a story steeped in brutality and difficult choices, forcing both Lila and Tiernan through a crucible of pain and growth. Shen masterfully doles out glimpses into their traumatic pasts, providing just enough context to make their present actions - however ruthless - psychologically understandable. Given its mafia backdrop, the narrative goes to some profoundly dark places. This is the antithesis of a cozy romance, and I must stress again: heed the trigger warnings.

The novel's pacing is impeccable, a relentless drive from the first page to the last. I never once felt the urge to skim. A significant part of that immersive tension in the audiobook version is due to the stellar narration by Lucy Rivers and Corvin King. They breathe raw, visceral life into Lila and Tiernan, delivering a performance that will meet the high expectations of their fans. Personally, I'd listen to them read a phone book.
