On StoryGraph, my rating landed at a solid 4.5 stars. Let's be clear: Taylor Jenkins Reid has a signature talent for crafting compelling, ambitious women, and she delivers yet again. As someone who adored Daisy Jones and the Six and has a soft spot for films like G.I. Jane, I was instantly captivated by this gritty, grounded portrait of a woman fighting for her place at NASA. While so many romance heroines are tucked away in coffee shops or academia, Reid shatters that mold by aiming her protagonist, Joan, for the stars.
The tension in Atmosphere stems from two powerful forces. First, there's the blatantly misogynistic environment of 1980s NASA - a battlefield in itself. Second, and more intimately devastating, is Joan's own sister, Barbara. While Joan trains for space, Barbara obsesses over curating a picture-perfect life, one that unfortunately leaves little room for her daughter, Frances. Joan steps into the void, becoming the de facto parent, and this dynamic is both heartbreaking and brilliantly drawn.
Here's where Reid's mastery shines: you often see the plot twists coming from a mile away, yet the impact is no less potent when they arrive. It's a unique kind of suspense - you spend chapters pleading with the characters to make different choices, only to be stunned when the narrative fearlessly goes exactly where you feared. That emotional rollercoaster is the book's greatest strength.
I deeply admired how the novel tackles sweeping issues - misogyny, LGBTQ+ rights, familial neglect - within the hyper-specific, jargon-filled world of astronaut training. Reid doesn't hold your hand with definitions; she immerses you. Gradually, you start to understand the terminology, feeling less like a reader and more like an insider privy to NASA's secrets.
Yes, this is billed as a love story, and it truly is. While the dust jacket hints at the profound bond between Joan and her niece, Frances, I was beautifully surprised by a mature, tender romance that unfolds between Joan and a fellow candidate. It's refreshing to follow a woman whose primary focus is her career and family, yet still finds passionate, transformative love a little later in life.
Why not a full five stars? My one hurdle was the expansive cast of secondary characters surrounding Joan. I frequently found myself flipping back to the character list for a refresher - a common challenge I face with Reid's ensemble-driven narratives. Unlike Daisy Jones, where each voice eventually carved its own space, some faces here remained blurred for me until the very end.
That minor critique aside, this book is absolutely essential reading. It's ripe with discussion points for any book club. Weeks after finishing, I still find myself in class, distracted by the vividness of Reid's world and the emotional echoes it left. Now, when I walk home at night and look up at the stars, I don't just see celestial bodies - I see a testament to the real women who broke that barrier, a truth that makes this fictional journey all the more powerful and poignant.
This story is utterly captivating. Whether you choose to lose yourself in the physical pages or experience the drama through its superb audiobook narration, I cannot recommend Atmosphere highly enough. It's an experience that will stay with you long after the final chapter.

Absolutely loved the shuttle, stars, human relationships & suspense. This is an exciting read. I had tears throughout the end of book. Written so beautifully. I work in high tech supplying connectors & cables to satellite & spacecraft manufacturers. I’ll never go to space but I’m thrilled to be part of this challenging industry.

This, wow, this is my new favorite book by THE TJR, which is a mighty statement because I have loved all her books.
*It’s not overwritten – she doesn’t drag this book out endlessly for a quota. Each sentence matters. Each character has weight.
