Alice dozes beside her sister, lulled into sleep - until a frantic, impeccably dressed White Rabbit bursts past. She chases him down his hole and tumbles headlong into a world of glorious, unhinged madness.
I expected the bizarre, and it delivered in spades! The John Tenniel illustrations in my copy are wonderfully strange, with characters so alive and ridiculous they leap from the page. The plot unfolds in a wonderfully chaotic, dreamlike fashion. Alice is in one place and then another, forgetting lines to songs she knows well. The logic of Wonderland is as fluid and unpredictable as a dream itself, with characters either fully agreeing or blatantly disagreeing with her.
It’s written in third person, with a lot of Alice’s inner monologue - something I normally dislike, but it’s done perfectly here. It fits the language and style of the entire book, and there’s a perfect balance between her thoughts and the words she speaks aloud.
The pacing is smooth and effortless. As a short story, Alice moves through Wonderland in every chapter, but it never feels rushed or drawn out. Each of the twelve chapters shows her interacting with new, mad characters, and none of the interactions are out of place or unnecessary. There are numerous callbacks and references throughout the story. As in dreams, characters come and go seemingly at random, and Alice accepts it all as a dreamer does: with full acceptance. Growing and shrinking? Interesting, if inconvenient. A human-handed animal or a living deck of cards? Bizarre, but nothing to throw a fit over. Alice walks through Wonderland with the entitlement of a snotty, but still completely endearing, child.
The Hatter’s peculiarity is legendary; he’s a man who can’t hold a conversation and yet it still works (up until the point Alice walks away out of annoyance). A fun fact - in the original books, he’s never called the Mad Hatter. He’s just “Hatter” or “Hatta.” The nickname “Mad Hatter” stuck over time, likely inspired by the mercury poisoning that drove many hatters of the day mad.
The memorable characters are endless: the March Hare, the White Rabbit, the Duchess and her Cheshire Cat, the Mock Turtle, and even Bill the Lizard. It’s a book that deserves a spot on everyone’s shelf, read at least once as a fun, interesting adventure.
I found it an incredibly fun read and would recommend it to anyone. It's a perfect story to lose yourself in, whether by reading the book or listening to the audiobook. The narration brings an extra layer of life to all these mad, memorable characters. It's a classic for a reason - it's bizarre, hilarious, and endlessly creative.

I’m pretty sure everyone knows what these books are about. Both Alice’s stories are completely bonkers and very much loved. I’ve read them many, many times over the years, they are part of the reason I got hooked on reading as a child and remain among my favourites of all time. Disney took elements of both the stories to create the classic Alice In Wonderland film, which was originally released on this day in 1951.
Put on some Jefferson Airplane and read them if you haven’t!

I love Alice in Wonderland as it is, and when I picked up this Audiobook I was unsure of its quality because of the Narrator but I have been pleasantly surprised. Now if I ever get the urge, I can listen to my all time favorite story and enjoy it front to back as if I were reading it to myself~
First time I enjoyed this book –
Maybe I’m too literal, but I’d always felt hard-pressed to read this as anything but jibberish. Scarlett J brought the book – and characters – to life. I feel like I experienced the book as the author may have intended it to entertain his own children.

I’ve never been able to get past the first chapter of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I tried other audio versions, reading it, renting the movie etc but always abandoned the effort early on. That is until Scarlett Johansson’s voices brought out the magic of the story. Sensational! Now if only she would do an audible version of Remembrance of Things Past!
