A Court of Mist and Fury. By Sarah J. Maas. Audiobook

My expectations for this novel were sky-high after finishing ACOTAR and that cliffhanger. Waiting a month for the book to arrive felt like an eternity, but I dove in the moment it landed in my mailbox. That gap between readings actually shaped my experience - I'd detached from the world and characters, so I approached this sequel with a fresh slate, just like the first book. I don't regret that mindset at all. It let me savor the story instead of rushing through to see how it ended. I made a point to read only about 100 pages each night (a challenge with its whopping 627 pages!) to fully absorb the plot and characters for a thoughtful review.

WHAT I LOVED

World Building: Maas does it again. Her description of the faerie realms is immersive and meticulous, painting every intricate detail so you can see this world vividly in your mind.

Enemies to Lovers: I'll keep this spoiler-free, but the execution of this trope is masterful. The romance is a slow, delicious burn - a pacing choice I found incredibly effective. It lets you truly know the characters before their feelings begin to shift.

Chosen Family: Honestly? The two main characters weren't even my favorites. I was completely drawn to the side characters, particularly Mor and Azriel. While ACOTAR had fewer side players, ACOMAF beautifully underscores the power of found family over blood ties.

Grief and Trauma: These heavy themes are addressed head-on, so please be mindful if they're triggers for you. As someone with personal experience in this area, I found Maas's portrayal of Feyre's journey to be raw and authentic. I appreciate when authors treat mental health not as a linear path, but as a fluid, evolving part of a person. Feyre's growth throughout the novel powerfully reflects that non-linear reality.

FINAL TAKE

Overall, I enjoyed this novel far more than ACOTAR. I'm not typically a fan of heavy romance, so there were sections I skimmed, but I don't believe skipping those parts hinders understanding the core story. There was a lot of hype on BookTok and BookTube about "Chapter 55" - touted as the romantic peak for certain characters (no spoilers!). Personally, I didn't find it as dramatic as the buzz suggested. My heart was much more invested in the "chosen family" dynamic, and that's what I'm hoping to see more of in the next installment. Maas has quickly become a new favorite author, and I look forward to reviewing more of her work here.
